I created Born in Bulgaria in 2015 as an initiative with the mission to support Bulgarians seeking a better life abroad, particularly in Germany. After the democratic changes in Bulgaria, over 3 million compatriots, or nearly 30% of the population, left the country in search of development opportunities. Official data shows that today, more than 400,000 Bulgarians live in Germany, often facing challenges such as a lack of knowledge about local laws, regulations, and culture.
The project was built entirely on a voluntary basis and self-funded. It offers a platform for mutual assistance, with its main tool being a forum where Bulgarians can share essential information and experiences. Over the years, the platform has attracted more than 8,200 registered users and over 5,000 forum posts, becoming a valuable resource for the Bulgarian community in Germany. All content on the platform is provided entirely in Bulgarian.
However, in 2024, due to insurmountable technical issues related to a lack of funding, much of the accumulated information was lost. This led to the necessity of switching to a free forum script with limited capabilities, which negatively impacted user activity. Despite these challenges, the project has managed to maintain stable traffic of around 300 unique visitors per day, thanks to the wealth of knowledge and discussions accumulated over the years.
The site remains accessible to all, but new registrations are temporarily paused while the project awaits better opportunities for development. Despite the obstacles, Born in Bulgaria continues to be a symbol of solidarity and support among Bulgarians abroad, entirely in the Bulgarian language.
